Vietnam Veterans Note

Dear Veterans,

if i had to say one word to you brave souls it would have to be "thank yout"
you sacrificed your life so that i could be free. You shouldnt think to much about the protestors because they dont realize that you are putting YOUR life on the line so that they can protest, the dont realize what you had to go through and you cooperated. they dont realize that you are there so they can have the freedom of protest, they must not realize that freedom is not free. and i believe that if i had to choose a hero, it would be the veterans because you are the reason i have the freedom to type you this.

sincrerley, and with much thanks,

nick segel

I Feel Like I’m Fixing To Die Rag by Joe McDonald
2 pages - complete by Wednesday May 23

This song by Country Joe and the Fish became one of the first protest songs of the Vietnam Era. Read the lyrics to the song, and then respond to the following:

What is the song asking the “big strong men to do”?
- to enlist in the army and fight in vietnam

… the “generals” to do?
-move fast and you could make your big break here and go get the reds.
… “Wall Street” to do?
- to publicize this war because there is good money.
… “mothers” to do?
- send their boys off packing
Write down four specific lines from the song that display sarcasm, cynicism, or anti-war
- "woopie were all gonna die"
- " to have your boy come home in a box"
- "were gonna have a whole lotta fun"
-" and you know that peace can only be won when weve blown em all to kingdom come"

What do these two poems and the article say about the impact of the war on the native Vietnamese? That it is murdering the civilians and the US dont care at all we are just fireing away at babies, women, children, and old men. And it is causing people to go crazy like set themselves on fire.

Can you think of any other ways in which the war will impact the native Vietnamese?

What MLK did for income

Based on the statistics on income for blacks and whites it looks like that their income has stayed the same and may have even gotten worse as the whites income goes up. in 1980 blacks made about $23,000 and whites made about $40,000 that is $17,000 more than whites. then in 1990 blacks made about 25,000 and whites made about 43,000 this is still $17,000 this is the same. it does get better in 2003 though but not by much. in 03 whites made about 46,000 and blacks made about 30,000 so that is only 1000 less.

if some one would want to fix it they would need to get more blacks educated, especaillly in the ghettos. they also need to select a wider variety of race for jobs.

Martin Luther King Jr. Question

Why does the author feel that whites owe King the greatest debt?
- The auther feels that whites owe king the greatest debt because he libered them from the burden of America's centuries-old hypocrisy about race.

Was King "the right man at the right time"?
-Yes because he was a preacher. this put him in touch with the spirit side of the black masses, and gave him a base inside the church.
- King was a man of extraordinary physical courage whose belief in nonviolence never swerved.
- he never gave up even after all of the death threats and bombing of his house.
Would King be upset with the current use of his most often quoted line? Why or why not?
- no because they were the stinging phrases of a prophet, a man demanding justice not just in the hereafter, but in the here and now.
- and it reminds people of what he did

Civil Disobedience

I don't think that i would be able to hae civil disobedience. when people were throwing stuff at me i could not just sit down and let them do that, i would react and probably be a bad reaction that i would later regret. i would maybe try civil disobedience but i doubt it would last just because i would want them to feel how it is. and it wouldnt happen that quickly.
